EducationIn 2000, Dawn Roan earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Harvard University, with a Language Citation in Russian. She has also completed extensive undergraduate coursework in English, math, and folklore and graduate coursework in human development and education. Her main interest is in the development of brain and behavior and in learning. She is an expert standardized test-taker with 99th-percentile scores on multiple standardized tests. She has successfully taught thousands of students how to navigate a wide range of standardized tests, even when the discipline is not necessarily her domain of expertise (e.g. PRAXIS).
ExperienceDuring the past 20+ years, Dawn has tutored and taught thousands of students from a variety of backgrounds, ages 5 to 72, in almost every subject imaginable. By day, she has lectured at the local university or developed curriculum in the growing online education industry, and by night, she has instructed test preparation courses and worked with students individually. She loves helping highly motivated students reach for their dreams and achieve their lifelong goals, whether that's gaining bragging rights, securing admission to a top choice school, or earning a scholarship.
In addition to traditional subject-based tutoring, Dawn works with students on career planning and on college and graduate school admissions processes. Her students have been accepted to a variety of institutions--including Harvard University, Stanford University, Johns Hopkins, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston University, James Madison University, Northwestern University, Temple University, Boston University, University of Washington, Texas A&M, Brigham Young University, University of Pennsylvania, Baylor University, and University of Utah--for baccalaureate, graduate, business, law, dental, and medical school programs.
As an AP scholar, high school valedictorian, Harvard University graduate, 99th-percentile standardized test taker, and long-time educator, Dawn Roan is particularly qualified to help you or your child. She flexes her teaching style to how her students learn, and uses analogies from sports, pop culture, games, music, or whatever her students relate best to.
She primarily meets with students online, but occasionally accepts in-person appointments from local residents.
Here's what a few of Dawn's clients have to say:
"Dawn is personable and professional. Her content is spot on. She can capture complex ideas and crystallize them into simple concepts. Dawn knows how to think, and she understands how other people think." - John K.
"Dawn helped me in applying for grad school and in preparing for the GRE. She was so motivating and boosted my confidence. I could never have done it without her help!" Renae M.
"Dawn and I have worked together for a number of years on GRE and GMAT test preparation classes. The students here call her “The Magician,” because she is not only able to teach them clearly how to do math problems but she is also able to teach them how to solve them faster…allowing them to finish the tests in time. She has remarkable math and thinking skills, and the students here sing her praises. I was so impressed with her abilities to teach and prepare students for the GRE and GMAT that I hired her to tutor my own children for the ACT. Their scores went up dramatically in the areas she tutored them in. She was organized in her approach, clear in her directions and explanations, easy to work with and extremely responsible. I would recommend her to anyone preparing to take standardized tests." - Debbie H.
"I am an administrator for BYU and was Dawn's employer for the last 7 years. What else can I say except she was our super star! She always received superior marks from our students and was highly sought after as a private tutor as well. I had her work with my own children and all three jumped in scores with her direction. I even had her try to teach an old dog like me as I considered going back to school for my Doctorate. She was amazing! We will miss her! You could not do better than Dawn!" - Rob H.
"I sincerely recommend giving Dawn a call and finding out what she can do for you and your child. Dawn’s help has opened doors otherwise impossible for my sons. That has changed their lives." - Sondra O.
HobbiesDawn loves reading--everything from classic literature to fantasy and sci fi, from ancient history and civilization to modern folklore or scientific research. Fiction...non-fiction, Dawn consumes them all. Dawn is a fan of sports, drama, martial arts, jewelry-making, movies, music, video games, dance, nature, and art, and she uses her experience in these areas to connect her students with the subject matter they are learning.
